Get all the latest on agroforestry and mixed farming as AGROMIX gets ready for final stretch..
This time four years ago, AGROMIX partners were preparing to host the project’s kick-off meeting amid a global pandemic that forced most interactions onto videocalls and cancelled numerous summits and conferences. The project nonetheless laid down its roots and began to grow.
Since those early days, AGROMIX partners have met dozens of times in person, trading ideas at workshops, conferences and summits that have taken the project from Brussels to Belgrade, from Brandenberg to Brno, and back to Brussels again via of many more – but less alliterative – places in between.
Thanks to the dedication of AGROMIX colleagues, the project has taken strides in its aim to illuminate the path towards the wider implementation of agroforestry and mixed farming. And that dedication extends beyond the constraints of an EU-funded project! We still have some great milestones to look forward to.
Thank you for reading what will be AGROMIX’s last newsletter, and read on for some interesting events and information.

AGROMIX to feature at World Food Forum in Rome
We are excited to confirm that AGROMIX will be featured at the World Food Forum's 2024 flagship event. The project’s coordinator Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schmutz (Coventry University), Rosemary Venn (Coventry University), and communication manager Dr. Josep Crous Duran (REVOLVE) will present the project from 2.00 - 2.30pm on 15 October at the exhibition area of the Farm venue.
Taking place from 14 to 18 October at the FAO headquarters in Rome and online, this event will bring together experts, changemakers, and leaders to drive the transformation of agrifood systems. The theme of this year’s event will be “Good food for all, for today and tomorrow,” promoting collaboration and innovation.
AGROMIX Policy recommendations to be unveiled in White Paper
Join the AGROMIX Project for the launch of its white paper, Transforming European Food Systems with Agroforestry, on 24 October 2024 from 9:00am at the Coventry University Brussels Hub (Avenue de Tervuren 168).
EU support for agroforestry has grown over the last decade but more supportive policies and initiatives are necessary for it to reach its full potential as a key feature of a wider agroecological transformation to sustainable food and farming systems.
At the white paper Launch, senior AGROMIX representatives and policy specialists will outline 5 key policy recommendations for the European Union to boost the uptake of agroforestry across the continent. Hard copies of the White Paper will also be made available.
For information on how to join, follow the event link below.
Back in June, REVOLVE travelled to AGROMIX’s Portuguese pilot site to chat with MVArc’s João Palma and Jo Smith about the potential of the Cistus rockrose shrub growing in the area. The pair also broach the challenges and barriers that are inhibiting the full potential of the plant. The footage is now deep in the editing process, so stay tuned for its publication over at the AGROMIX YouTube channel in the coming weeks.
Fans of the AGROMIX Instagram account — have no fear. Rather than let it gather dust after the project, REVOLVE will merge the account with other EU projects related to soil and agriculture. If you’re following AGROMIX on Instagram already, then keep your eyes peeled for the change!
AGROMIX colleagues from Wageningen University have published a new factsheet summarising different types of agroforestry in the Netherlands. Check it out here.
The team has also published a new video offering a tour of their agroforestry extermination area.
Colleagues focused on WP1's Task 1.5, which involves the revision of the AGROMIX Project's results and methodological aspects, are on the final stretch. The report attempts to summarise the feedback from the work of the WPs, their outcomes, and to identify the potential improvements for further implementation of AF/MF systems.
Specifically, T1.5 is currently conducting a survey among AGROMIX WP leaders about the resilience framework, the resilience indicators, SWOT analysis to evaluate the major outcomes of the project. The results of this internal review will be further discussed with selected stakeholders in a final workshop, where the AGROMIX framework of resilience and the set of resilience indicators will be improved in a participatory way.
