WORLD IS UNDERVALUING NATURE, REPORT SAYS: Nature is predominantly seen as an economic asset — by supporting short-term growth through resource extraction — but that needs to change if the world wants to stop biodiversity loss, a new report warned. Penned by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES https://ipbes.net/), the report stated that indicators, such as GDP, often “overlook the non-market values associated with nature’s contributions to people,” their wellbeing and quality of life. But it added that other concepts for valuing nature, such as green economy, degrowth and earth stewardship, can help fill these gaps because they “seek a more diverse valuation of nature as a foundation for reconciling social, economic and ecological dimensions.” by Mr. Karl Reimand of Oxford University.

The Czech Republic has published its programme for the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, involving the new program of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council.
Among the continuation of the previous years' progression on food security, sustainability in agriculture, especially in the field of livestock farming, fisheries, food systems, forest management, agricultural and food supply and biodiversity conservation, the program highlights the importance of the Regulation on the sustainable use of pesticides, and the implementation of the New EU Forest Strategy 2030 in order to balance the social, environmental and economic aspects of sustainable forest management and the respect for principles of subsidiarity and proportionality, also referring to the EU Deforestation Law.
The ENDR newsletter provides explanation on the topic: ‘CZ PRES’ priorities concerning CAP include the draft Regulation on the sustainable use of pesticides and harmonisation of rules for the new labelling of nutritional information on the front of food packaging. Other work is expected to involve revision of the rules for the Geographical Indications (GIs) for agricultural products, among other CAP priorities.

The European Commission is carrying out an impact assessment in preparation for the revision of the Waste Framework Directive (https://ec.europa.eu/environment/topics/waste-and-recycling/waste-framework-directive_en).
The objectives of the revision are to limit waste generation, increase re-use, and increase cost-efficient preparing for re-use and quality recycling, including for waste oils and textiles. The revision will explore opportunities for simplification to make legislation clearer and reduce burden on citizens and businesses. As part of this impact assessment, the Commission will also examine policy options related to the setting of EU-level targets for food waste reduction. The EU Farm to Fork Strategy calls for the establishment of such targets.
In this context, the Commission is carrying out a public consultation to collect additional evidence on existing performance; seek opinions and insights about the problem, the feasibility and possible impacts (economic, social and environmental) of alternative actions (including what are possible actions); gather examples of best practices and views on the subsidiarity of possible actions.
