The keeping of animals in agroforestry systems can be perceived in general positively. Farming systems with trees on pastures and meadows with grazing livestock offer protection from adverse weather conditions. In fact, many grazing animals use the edges of the agroforestry strips as protection from wind and sun. When establishing an agroforestry system for cattle, the strips of woody vegetation can be used in such a way that they act as a natural pasture fence, dividing a large area of grassland into several smaller areas. This offers the possibility of converting a forage-rich permanent pasture into a structure-rich, sheltered and forage-efficient rotational pasture. Moreover, grazing animals can be better herded in such a sensibly structured area (e.g. for treatment) than on large open areas. Poultry also feel at home in the wooded strips taking advantage of the protection of the trees from possible predators. The dangers of predators should not be underestimated, especially when the trees are still young and therefore do not offer enough protection.
