Dear AGROMIX Community,

Time flies when you’re having agroforestry fun, and a lot has been achieved since we last touched base for the AGROMIX Policy Summit: Agroforestry for the Future of European Agriculture all the way back in April! If you were unable to attend, you will find here our write-up from the event or, if you prefer, a livestream recording of (almost) the whole Summit.

Since then, the AGROMIX Project has been engaged in a number of events across Europe. In May, project partners graced the EURAF conference in Brno, Czechia, where they held the public launch of the Treefiles App (see below for more!) with a brand-new promo video and communications materials. Additionally, there has been a lot of activity from our AGROMIX colleagues in the UK with the attendance of several events including the Agroforestry Open Day, the Farm Woodland annual meeting and the Groundswell Festival.

Going forward, all eyes are on the closing stages of the AGROMIX Project, which will involve the completion of a White Paper on policy recommendations for the European Commission, continued work on the publication of scientific publications and the preparation of more visual appealing materials (handbook, factsheets…) to present the work done on the project deliverables. For all this and more, read on!

News from the project

  • WP3
AGROMIX attended the International Symposium on Climate-Resilient Agri-Environmental Systems (ISCRAES 2024) in Dublin and gave a keynote presentation on the project findings.

  • WP6
The Agroforestry Open Day 19-20 May 2024 was another great success with over 40 farms participating across the UK and beyond, and 600+ visitors across all sites. The event continues to grow year on year and the organisers are keen for it to grow internationally as an exciting opportunity for other farmers, policy makers and the general public to see all sorts of agroforestry systems in practice. All farmers with integrated trees in their systems are welcome to get involved!

AGROMIX colleague Rosemary Venn presented her work on policy review from EU, USA, India and Brazil at the recent Farm Woodland Forum, hosted at partner university Cranfield.

AGROMIX representatives from Coventry and WERVEL attended the Groundswell Festival on 26-27 June and participated in the Agroforestry Tent hosted by Soil Association and Woodland Trust. The MIX-APP (WP4), a tree-choice online database was presented, and testers, collaborators, and farmers were invited to join.

Policy Development

  1. Work continues on the final AGROMIX White Paper (a policy document advising the European Commission on how to better support agroforestry uptake in the EU). We are looking for European agroforestry ‘endorsers’ for the White Paper, including relevant national agroforestry associations, groups, companies, research institutes etc.

Please forward your suggestions from your country to Vincent Dauby and Rosemary Venn:
    vincent.dauby@agroecology-europe.org
    rosemary.venn@coventry.ac.uk

  2. UK partners continue to be active in conversations and developments of agroforestry policy as CAP is phased out and Environmental Land Management (ELMs) introduced. The UK Government will be providing for agroforestry under the new Sustainable Farming Incentive payment schemes.
